Relatively stable financing in banks Chart 4.2 shows the size of stable financing sources (here defined as customer deposits, equity capital and bonds) as a percentage of banks illiquid assets (lending and fixed assets). Less stable financing and more illiquid assets result in a lower value for the indicator. A low value for this indicator therefore implies high liquidity risk. In general, a value of 100 implies that banks have balanced illiquid assets with stable funding sources. Measured by this indicator, liquidity risk in the three largest banks is lower than in small and medium-sized banks. One reason that small and medium-sized banks have less stable financing is a lower level of borrowing in the bond market. For these banks, borrowing in the bond market may be more difficult than for large banks because such funding often requires a size that exceeds the borrowing needs of smaller banks. Unless they participate in a joint bond issue, they will rely more heavily on the short-term paper market, which is not defined as a stable source of financing in the indicator. However, the indicator is a better measure for analysing developments in financing strategy over time for each bank group than for comparing groups. Banks do not appear to have changed their strategy appreciably in recent years. The indicator has risen somewhat for both bank groups since September 2001, which in isolation implies lower liquidity risk than six months ago.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Following its $100 million acquisition by Tanfield Group Plc in June, Snorkel International has introduced a full line of aerial work platforms to its portfolio that Tanfield said will be the principal brand sold in North America going forward. The U.K.-based Tanfield also owns the UpRight brand of aerial lifts, which the new Snorkel additions are based on. The Snorkel series will encompass eight new machines made up of electric scissors, mast and articulated boom lifts, and rough terrain vertical lifts that are used in the construction and industrial maintenance markets. The eight models selected as Snorkels lineup were chosen, Tanfield said, based on the high demand for their size class. Prior to the acquisition, Snorkels portfolio comprised a full line of self-propelled booms, articulating booms, telescoping booms, aerial lifts and self-propelled scissor lifts. “The current Snorkel management team has done a superb job of developing Snorkel over the past few years,” said Darren Kell, CEO at Tanfleld. “Snorkel can now instantly expand into a full-line manufacturer for quality rough terrain scissors and big booms. Our research tells us that there is a pent-up demand within Snorkels customer base for this type of machine.” Within the new lineup are two diesel-powered models, introduced as the SR2684SL and SR3084SL rough terrain boom lifts. Sold in Europe as the SL26SL and SL30SL under the UpRight brand, the new SR2684SL and SR3084SL have a platform height of 26 and 30 ft., and are powered by 1.13 L three-cylinder Perkins 403C-11 diesel engines rated 19.5 hp at 3000 rpm.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers The DVD6C Licensing Agency (DVD6C), the industry body representing the seven leading developers of DVD technology and formats — AOL Time Warner Inc., Hitachi, Ltd., IBM Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) — today announced that it expects to start global licensing of essential patents for DVD-Audio and recordable DVD products on or about January 1, 2003. Licenses will cover both drives and media, including DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R. DVD6Cs license portfolio for recordable DVDs has gathered together essential patents owned by its member companies. Licensees using its services will benefit from one-stop shopping for key intellectual properties, and be able to apply it to products that comply with DVD-format specifications defined by the DVD Forum. Interested parties are also free to negotiate separate license agreements with DVD6Cs seven member companies, rather than taking out a single portfolio license. The companies have committed to provide such licenses for their patents under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms and conditions.

NEISS-AIP is operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The program collects data on initial visits for all injuries treated in EDs from a nationally representative stratified probability sample of 66 hospitals in the United States (4). Data on the most severe injury for each case are abstracted from medical records. Data include age, sex, location, primary diagnosis (based on a system developed by CPSC), primary part of the body injured, disposition, up to two CPSC product codes, and a two-line summary narrative describing the circumstances of the injury. A case was defined as an unintentional, nonfatal fall injury treated in an ED during 2001-2006 with a record that either included the product code 2001 (animal-induced injury) or had “pet,” “dog,” “cat,” “puppy,” or “kitten” mentioned in the narrative. A total of 7,826 records were identified initially. The narrative for each record was reviewed, and 370 cases were excluded because the fall did not involve a dog or cat, or a pet or pet item was not directly involved in the fall (e.g., “patient jumped off a fence and fell onto a doghouse.”). The type of pet (dog or cat), location, activity, and circumstances at the time of the fall were categorized and coded based on the information in the narrative. For the analyses of dogs and cats separately, 23 cases that involved both cats and dogs were excluded; dog-related injuries were combined when cases involved one or more dogs, and cat-related injuries were combined when cases involved one or more cats. Each case was weighted based on the inverse probability of the hospital being selected, and the weights were summed to produce national estimates. Rates per 100,000 population were calculated using U.S. Census Bureau population estimates*; 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a direct variance estimation procedure that accounted for the sample weights and complex sampling design. Estimates based on <20 cases or with a coefficient of variation >30% were considered unstable, and the rates and CIs were not reported. Based on 7,456 cases recorded in NEISS-AIP, an estimated average of 86,629 fall injuries associated with cats and dogs occurred in the United States each year during 2001-2006, for an average annual injury rate of 29.7 per 100,000 population (Table 1). Nearly 7.5 times as many injuries involved dogs (76,223 [88.0%]) compared with cats (10,130 [11.7%]), and females were 2.1 times more likely to be injured than males. Injuries were most frequent among persons aged 0-14 years and 35-54 years. The most common injuries and the highest injury rates were for fractures and contusions/abrasions, and the highest fracture rates occurred among persons aged 75-84 years and [greater than or equal to] 85 years. Among hospitalized patients, 79.9% were admitted for fractures.

The smallest number of domestic vacationers (8 percent) travel between 500 and 599 miles. Since 84 percent of all vacation trips utilize a car, truck, or recreational vehicle, and 54 percent of all family trips include kids, its easy to see why 599 miles isnt a terribly popular travel distance, falling just after “Im so bored I could scream” and a little before “I want to go home.” According to the TIAs forecast, 63 percent of Americans intended to do some vacation travelling this summer, a number that has remained fairly stable during the past six years - as has the number of people for whom “vacation travel” means “trips to the bathroom” - 14 percent of those polled by the TIA predicted they would be spending their vacation time going nowhere in the summer of 1999. The reason? Money, for one.

This biweekly magazine reports on national, international and cultural affairs from a conservative perspective.
As the political debate over immigration hots up - see our cover story on immigration and the GOP - immigration advocates have just executed a major strategic retreat. Under a smokescreen of the usual abuse of immigration critics, the June 20 BusinessWeek has conceded that there are indeed major problems with post-1965 immigrants welfare-participation rates and skin levels. And it attempts to establish a new defensive line: These problems are concentrated among refugees and illegal immigrants; legal immigrants are still okay. This is a highly significant development. BusinessWeek and its immigration writer Michael J. Mandel have been relentless drum-beaters for immigration. Mr. Mandels July 13, 1992, cover story, “The Immigrants: How Theyre Helping the U.S. Economy,” stands as a museum piece of pro-immigration cliches. Of course, the problems Mr. Mandel has discovered now were also perfectly obvious then. But at that time he glossed over them, saying that overall immigrant welfare participation was “only” about 10 per cent higher than among the native-born. Evidence that the more recent immigrants were sharply more welfare-prone was simply suppressed. Now, however, since refugees and illegal immigrants constitute up to a third of the total influx every year, even Mr. Mandel has been forced into a decisive, if tacit, admission: that the chaotic system of laws, regulations, and enforcement practices laughingly known as U.S. immigration “policy” is broke. And must be fixed. It is quite true that, because refugees are immediately eligible for welfare, they tend to stay on it. This produces startlingly high welfare-participation rates even among groups widely celebrated as successful, entrepreneurial, potentially Republican voters, etc., such as Cubans (16.0 per cent) and ex-Soviets (16.3 per cent). It is also probably the case that illegal immigrants are less skilled on average, and thus more likely to become economic casualties. They are obviously getting welfare quickly too, if only through their American-born children, citizens by virtue of the Fourteenth Amendment. But it is not true that, if you subtract refugees and illegals, immigrants present no problems. Indeed, BusinessWeeks own statistics show that “nonrefugee immigrants” have an average welfare-participation rate of 7.8 per cent, compared to a native-born rate of 7.4 per cent. And the rate among native-born American whites is dramatically lower, perhaps only 5 per cent.)

Capabilities Include the Use of Optimization to Refine Model and
Control System Parameters for Increased Model Accuracy and Improved
Control System Performance
NATICK, Mass. — The MathWorks today announced the availability of Simulink Design
Optimization, which gives modeling and control engineers the ability to
automatically optimize Simulink model parameters.
Together, Simulink Design Optimization, Simulink, Simscape, and Simulink
Control Design provide a powerful modeling and control design
environment that enables engineers to create plant models, calibrate
these models with test data, and use them to design, simulate, and
optimize control systems.
With Simulink Design Optimization, modeling engineers can calibrate
models with test data directly, bypassing time-consuming trial and error
methods. Simulink Design Optimization lets control engineers use
optimization algorithms for automatic controller parameter adjustment to
meet system performance requirements.
“We are continually looking for ways to ease the design process for
users,” said Paul Barnard, marketing director for design automation at
The MathWorks. “With Simulink Design Optimization, we are simplifying
complex parameter optimization, enabling engineers to quickly create
more accurate models and better control systems.”
