By Lindsey Geisler The Governors Annual Easter Egg Hunt was anything but a sure bet this year. Storms that raged Friday night threatened to continue into Saturday. That would have forced the event to move to a downtown parking garage where candy would have been handed out.

Private Investigations
The search for a missing southern Utah man is getting a boost from a team of private investigators. The Private Investigator Association of Utah is volunteering some of its members time and skills to help track down Christopher Coan. Its a case that has perplexed police and left his family heartbroken. Coan, 18, vanished from a Subway shop in Iron County on Sept. 3, 2007. He left his drivers license, clothing and money behind. His 1994 maroon and silver Chevy S-10 Blazer with stickers on the back window hasnt been found. The temporary license tag expired in October, and the vehicle has been listed as missing in a national crime database.

THE POPE has urged Roman Catholic lawyers and magistrates to refuse to handle divorce cases. He warned that divorce was “spreading like the plague” and lawyers should decline to use their profession for, “an end that is contrary to justice”. Pope John Paul II has in the past insisted that Catholic doctors not perform abortions or assist women with contraception. But this is the first time he has tried to tell the legal profession what to do. The reaction from politicians and advocates in Italy has been one of dismay at such open interference in civil issues.
Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are the latest celebrity couple to find out the hard way that divorce often ends in a long, acrimonious and expensive court battle. But many costly annulments could be avoided if alternative and less hostile means of separation were explored first, new research suggests. Sir Paul says his experience of seeking a divorce - which has included mediation - is like “going through hell”. In an interview with Radio Times, published today, the former Beatle, 65, adds: “As Winston Churchill once said, If you are going through hell, keep going! The only solution is to remain dignified. If I dont keep a silence about it, I lose this idea of being dignified.” The NAOs research implies that solicitors are costing the public purse up to 10m a year by putting profits before their clients interests. Under the legal aid system, solicitors can expect to be paid much more in fees if their case is settled in court. In a third of cases examined by the NAO, lawyers had failed even to suggest that a client seeking a divorce or separation should first consider mediation as alternative to court. The Legal Services Commission (LSC), which authorises legal aid payments, spends about 300m a year helping those who qualify for state funding to deal with a family breakdown.

Is your credit union on the hunt for a new core processing system? If so, be aware that nobodys going to make it easy for you. In fact, sometimes theyll do quite the opposite. If vendors arent going to tell you what you want to know, who is? You are, but youll have to do a little digging. Dont accept proclamations at face value. Unearth some skeletons. Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Twenty-five years ago, an entire desktop computers processing power handled less data than todays Palm Pilot(TM). Computers required highly skilled operators. The idea that practically every American would have a computer on his or her desk someday was utterly unbelievable, let alone the fact that one day computers would be carried in your briefcase, or even in your shirt pocket. The Internet, e-mail, computer– aided design, and countless other everyday tools would not exist without the computer. At the forefront of supercomputing are SGI and NASA. They teamed up early this year to install a 512-processor system based on SGIs Origin- 3800 system at NASAs Ames Research Center. The supercomputer is being used by NASA to develop spacecraft, and perform computational fluid dynamics, global climate modeling, and computational astrobiology. Today, computers define generations. The PC and the advent of the Internet have revolutionized the world, providing the ability to communicate with virtually anyone, anywhere, who has access to a computer. There are no barriers, no borders.

Plastics and concrete fencing materials are projected to post some of the fastest growth over the forecast period. Gains for plastic fencing will come primarily at the expense of wood. Plastic materials can offer similar aesthetics to those of wood, with advantages in reduced maintenance costs. Vinyl will account for the vast majority of the plastic fencing total in 2007, with wood-plastic composite lumber and high-density polyethylene representing much smaller fractions In residential markets, demand for vinyl fencing will be aided by homeowners desires to reduce the burden of caring for their property.
Signature PVC portable and permanent fencing systems can be used for outdoor cafe areas, crowd control and crowd routing, and other uses. The line consists of several styles and heights of white fencing panels that can be linked together. It will not warp, rot, rust or splinter and does not need to be repainted.
Once in a while you see in some magazine article a list, drawn up by psychologists, of the most stressful life events. Way up near the head of the list, just under death and divorce, are moving house and having contractors in. I have sworn never to move house again, having boxes still unpacked from our last move twelve years ago; but there is no avoiding contractors, not unless you have much more time, and a far wider range of do-it-yourself skills, than we have. This years visitation has been the fencing people. That last move, back in 1992, was our first from the city to the suburbs. Rosie had set her heart on getting a dog, so I insisted we put up a fence round the back yard, to permit the creature some free roaming out of doors. We called in a local firm, which sent two young men, college students I think, to put up 200 feet of wooden palings, which we then painted white. A white picket fence! We two immigrants felt we had penetrated at last to the warm suburban heart of the American dream. Twelve years later the fence was in a sorry state. Weather, termites, and a sort of creeping greenish slime had done their work, weakening and disfiguring. The dog was still with us, and we put off decisions for a year or so with the excuse that he could not live much longer, and wed get a new fence when he left us. The dog, however, though an octogenarian in people years, remains doggedly, and doggily, hale and hearty, while the fence is so dilapidated that he can push his way through it with little difficulty, and has begun showing up in neighbors yards. By this spring the logic of the situation had become inescapable: We needed a new fence.

A Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg responds: You might say something like: I am coming to you because I love and respect you, and I know you love me and dont want me to mess up my life. But I need to feel that you respect my judgment and have faith that I am making the right choice for me at this time. Right now I am where I want to be. > Its always important to wear cool nightwear around the house: you never know when that foxy man is going to turn up on your doorstep. However, someone should tell Heather Graham that this only applies indoors. She turned up at an Entertainment Weekly party dressed as a spooky baby doll, not only looking daft next to anyone wearing normal clothes, but also next to the medieval gypsy women on her nightie.
Luckily, Ive managed to avoid this particular form of repetitive strain injury. Incredibly, after averaging half a dozen parties a week for almost 20 years, I still love going out. As I squint into the bathroom mirror and put the finishing touches to my “look” - this doesnt take long since Im the spitting image of William Hague - my heart still beats a little faster in anticipation of the evenings entertainment. Since this usually consists of a free meal with a PR woman at some restaurant thats about to go under, followed by the opening of an envelope, you could describe this as the triumph of hope over experience. Nevertheless, the glass of cheap white wine is always half full rather than half empty. One reason for this, at least until I got married last July, was the optimistic belief that I might end up going home with some gorgeous model. Needless to say, this has never, ever happened. After living in New York for five years, and doggedly going to every fashion party I could, I discovered that pulchritudinous cover girls tend not to be very interested in short, balding, British hacks. As a rule, models dont date mortals. In 1999, in the run-up to Christmas in Manhattan, I went to 13 parties and the only time I managed to persuade a beautiful mannequin to stop looking over my shoulder for 30 seconds was when Joseph Fiennes wandered past. Among the New York glitterati, its considered so “trailer park” to gawk at celebrities that whenever one comes near they look anywhere but straight at them. Consequently, when Joseph Fiennes was standing right next to me, the frisky young model I was talking to looked me directly in the eye for the first time that evening. Then she followed Joseph Fiennes out the door.
Its a difficult confession for me to make, being a style leader and all that, but Im having a serious problem with the Eighties revival. I know its all fabulously post-modern and ironic, and I dare say Im still just bitter about not copping off with Simon Le Bon in my teens, but dancing to “Dont You Want Me” on a Monday night just isnt twiddling my knobs second time around. Which is a shame, because I seem to be going to more and more parties where the Eighties are de rigeur. This week, for example, I went to the super-duper-hipsky launch party for Sheryl Garratts excellent book Adventures in Wonderland: A Decade of Club Culture. Im afraid, under the circumstances, the book would have been better named A Decade in Culture Club. But there you go, too late now. Still, Sheryl Garratt was really lovely, although not quite what you would expect of an ex-The Face editor. Big, bouncy and friendly, her silver shirt battened down like armour from the neck to the sleeves, youd be forgiven for thinking that Garratts never been near a club in her life.

Data for June and July show the first signs of softening in the construction sector. According to seasonally adjusted data, the value of construction put in place in July was approximately at the same level as in June and thus 7.4% lower than in May. In the five months to May, the value of construction put in place was 38.7% higher than a year ago; in June and July the difference narrowed to 16.7%. Employment in the construction sector continued to rise. In 2006, the number of workers employed in the construction sector was 7.5% higher than in the previous year. In the first seven months of 2007 it surged by 11%. The hiring of foreign workers has also been on the increase (see SEM 7/2007: 11). The number of workers rose particularly in building completion and general construction, similarly as last year. In terms of worker status, sole proprietors and their employees recorded higher growth rates. Increasingly many firms face difficulties in finding labour. According to business trends in construction, 51% of construction firms reported “a shortage of skilled labour” as a limiting factor to production. If answers are weighted by the number of employees, this share is even higher (58%) - the highest in five years (since these data have been available). The shortage of skilled workers became a significant limiting factor in the second half of 2006 (see graph), coinciding with the boom in construction activity in that period.
The growth of construction activity was the in 15 years. This robust growth was again driven by the construction of motorways, in addition to the pick-up in the construction of non-residential buildings, which reached its highest level since 1999 The value of construction put in place surged by 15.3% over 2005. Growth in civil engineering totalled 16.8%. The construction of buildings rose by 14.0%, within that, non-residential construction was up 17.7% while residential construction increased by 2.6%. Based on detailed data about the issued building permits we estimate that the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings and hotels picked up last year. In interpreting the data on the value of residential construction put in place we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller companies (see the note under the table), in which, in our estimate, the construction of buildings is the main activity. The number of workers in the construction sector rose sharply in 2006, especially in the final quarter. The number of people employed in construction was on average 7.5% higher in 2006 than in 2005. In the fourth quarter alone, it increased by as much as 9.7% over the year before The number of employees by activity rose particularly in building completion, in the latter pari of the year it also increased in general construction In lerms of employee status, the number of individual private entrepreneurs and their employees rose the most last year. The number of planned dwellings and the total planned floor area of buildings continued to increase in the final quarter of 2006. The planned floor area of new buildings and extensions was 27.5% higher than in the same quarter of 2005 (43 8% for non-residential buildings and 16.9% for residential buildings) In 2006 as a whole, the total floor area of the planned buildings increased by 35.8%. within that by 19.7% for residential buildings and by 56 0% for non-residential buildings The building permits issued last year were granted for the construction of 8.260 new dwellings, which is 19.6% more than in 2005 and 47.0% more than the average of the previous seven years (since these data have been available)

THIS MONTH IM NOT writing for you, but to you. I get many letters from aspiring and perspiring personal trainers with myriad questions ranging from how to raise the bar–pun intended–to how to raise their rates. They want to know how to start, how to stay and how to grow as a business. Ill try to hit some of the recurring themes this month. * Job vs. career. Theres no correct answer here; just dont be one and say youre the other. Many people elect to become trainers as a way to supplement their income but have no desire to break new ground in health or fitness. Others make it their lifes work and will stop at nothing to see it through. To flirt with the field and portray yourself as a lifer to raise your rates is not cool. * Commit to the hours. Look, garbage men work early in the morning and bartenders work late at night. Trainers usually work when others dont, like many service-industry people. This is something you should know before entering the profession. If thats not okay with you, youll be the trainer who gripes to all his clients about being tired and the hours he keeps. Would you want to train with that guy?
Its time to assess your post-holiday physical fitness level; and if your exercise routine the past month consisted of running errands to the mall, now may be the perfect time to consider a personal trainer to help you maximize your time and financial investment. Many of todays personal trainers have college degrees in kinesiology, exercise physiology, sports medicine or biomechanics, and are specifically trained to deliver physical fitness training programs, said Jason Block, director of personal training for the Michigan Athletic Club (MAC). “The level of certification, education and training for personal trainers has risen dramatically. A bachelors or masters degree in a health-related field is the norm now,” said Block, who has a masters degree in kinesiology from Illinois State University.
WORK OUT? read this! Since 1988, ISSA has provided certification and continuing education for over 80,000 satisfied fitness professionals worldwide. Our certifications boast international recognition–after all, we were the first organization to offer personal training certification and create specialized courses for fitness professionals.

Private Investigations
The pin-hole camera picks up the man knocking on the door of a council flat. The fuzzy edge of the circular image lends a covert feel to the scene, which is being taped for use as evidence. The on-screen time stamp ticks over as the bearded man bends to call through the letter- box. A moment later a man opens the door and ushers in the visitor. Is this a buyer visiting his drug dealer? Or just one friend calling on another? The time-lapse video monitors the flat 24 hours a day. A neighbour has complained of slamming doors at all times of the day and night. The council has to check the allegation and gather evidence to use in court, if necessary. The complainant is too scared to testify against the tenants, so the council is using private detectives to search for information. Phil works for Burgess PDQ, a detective agency that his father, Steve, runs from a three-room office suite near Manchesters main shopping area. The agencys first taste of council work came 18 months ago when Salford wanted to gather information on a nuisance case. Since then the agency has investigated cases involving drugs, noise, harassment and car crime.
The romance novel lifestyle of a private investigator is pure fiction, much like the books in which they live. Private investigators today are more likely to be working for defense attorneys on homicide cases or extracting evidence from a computer than sitting in a dimly lit bar downing club sodas asking the bartender if they know a gal named Ginger. Meanwhile, more attention is being paid to ethics in an industry that has sometimes lacked professionalism. Locally, several retired law enforcement detectives have opened their own private detective agencies and say they have the background and experience to be successful private eyes. Owen Deatrick formed Dynasty Consultants in 2002 after retiring in 1999 with 28 years in law enforcement, all of them with the Lansing Police Department. His firm handles a variety of a criminal defense investigations, plus insurance fraud and background investigations.

In the “collaborative-law” process, both husband and wife meet together with their lawyers to reach a settlement, which is then brought before a court for final approval. Lawyers, who have settled divorces using this method, say the process is shorter compared with traditional divorce litigation, and, therefore, less costly.
Its an untapped market to some degree, said Justin Joseph, an openly gay divorce lawyer at Denvers Joseph Law Group. Therell be a lot more people coming into the system, and well definitely see more cases going through the courts because the courts will have no choice but to recognize them.

After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!

A private investigator is suing attorney H. Blanton Brown over files he says Brown refuses to relinquish involving a lawsuit against Skirvin Plaza Hotel owner Oesman Sapta. Myles won a $1.9 million lawsuit against Sapta in connection with a failed business deal involving OSO Motors Inc., formerly owned by Sapta. Plaintiffs allege they conducted extensive investigation for Brown to assist him in representing Myles. They also say that Brown made assurances to them that they would be paid “well in excess of their normal hourly rate” for the work. Berglan and Taylor contend they devoted nine investigators and hundreds of man hours to help Brown but have not received payment for the work. They also allege that they turned over their files on the case to Brown as part of a settlement Myles was to reach with Sapta that never materialized. Part of the failed settlement required all records in the case to be destroyed. Though the records are still intact, plaintiffs say that Brown wont give them up. “I dont know why hes keeping my files,” Taylor said. A similar plea was made by Myles new attorney, Russell Wright, who claims that Brown is unlawfully holding Myles file and preventing Wright, a former associate of Brown, from adequately representing Myles. Myles terminated Brown as his attorney in April. He has been unable to collect any of his $1.9 million judgment from Sapta. Brown argues that he is entitled to keep Myles file as a lien on his portion of the judgment Myles received. Earlier this week, federal Judge Robin Cauthron refused to consider Wrights motion to compel Brown to turn over Myles file. This current law suit, says Brown, is an indirect attempt by Wright, who offices with Taylor, to obtain Myles file. Brown said Berglan and Taylors case is without merit. “The case will be resolved swiftly,” he said.

(This story was originally published in Lawyers Weekly USA, another Dolan Media publication). When parents with children divorce, their relationship is rarely over. The plan - which was distributed in September to 1,600 members - is intended to be a road map for navigating potentially bumpy child- rearing issues. It covers everything from where children will live and who theyll spend holidays with, to what after-school activities they can attend and what their summer schedules will be. The plan also asks parents to agree on their childrens religious upbringing and to confer with each other about non-emergency medical, dental and psychological treatments.
Home News IN BRIEF –Heather Mills has split from the lawyers representing her in her divorce from Sir Paul McCartney. The news came after Mills gave several television interviews which mentioned the divorce.
Lawyers who handle collaborative divorce cases are passionate about the method. They tout it as a kinder, gentler way to do divorce, a process that saves clients money and reduces the hostility between the soon- to-be exes. But some family law attorneys are, to put it mildly, unconvinced. They believe collaborative divorce is useful for the occasional couple but is, in general, a minefield of inflated hopes and potential ethical problems.

Hungry Howies Pizza, a 550-store chain
that has reinvented pizza by flavoring the crust eight different ways,
plans to open 10 locations in Oregon and southwest Washington by 2011. The
10-store franchise agreement covers Portland, Bend and Vancouver. The
first Hungry Howies pizzeria in the area is expected to open in the
Portland metropolitan area by June.

“I discovered Hungry Howies when I was living in California, and the
flavored crust concept struck home. It offers the same appeal as flavored
bagels and breads: the ability to suit individual tastes and moods. You
can not only have different toppings but different crusts every time you
order,” Bauer said. “Theres nothing like it in Oregon or southwest
Washington, and that point of distinction will set us apart from all the
other look-alike chains.”

Pizza crust flavors available from Hungry Howies include original, ranch,
onion, buttered, garlic herb, sesame seed, butter cheese and Cajun. Dough
is prepared fresh every morning at each store. The menu also includes a
lower-carb “crisp and thin” pizza crust, oven-baked calzone-style subs,
Howie Wings, Howie Bread breadsticks with marinara sauce, and a variety of
salads.

Yamhill County will get its first Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse with a new location in McMinnville, as prominent retailers reach beyond the immediate Portland metropolitan area for fresh markets. Lowes will anchor a planned 250,000- to 275,000-square-foot retail center on property at the junction of Highways 18 and 99 West and the Highway 18 Bypass in south McMinnville. Meanwhile, Lowes has new locations under construction in Hillsboro and Vancouver, Wash. Last week, another store opened in Salem, said Stephen Gale, director of real estate acquisition for Lowes Western regional office in Carlsbad, Calif. “There are additional opportunities in the Portland metro market (and in Pacific) Northwest communities we are working on,” Gale said.

In Japan, textile products in a new category helpful to beauty and health have made their appearance. Fuji Spinning Co., Ltd. (Fujibo) has commercialized its vitamin-finished fabric “V-UP” and that was the start of this phenomenon. Subsequently, each firm has presented textile products with aromas to create a good feeling or with special ingredients to make the burning of fat easier. Later, this boom disappeared. Then in 2001, Fujibo announced “V-UP”. Its catch phrases in selling were “wearing vitamins” and “Vitamin C-formulated fabrics.” Vitamin C keeps the generation of melamine in the human body under control and exhibits skin whitening effects. Vitamin C functions to promote the synthesis of collagen and to restrain the decomposition of collagen, while it is effective in preventing wrinkles on the skin. The anti-oxidation effects exhibited by the sebum can also ward off sunburn. Even so, Vitamin C itself is unstable because it is weak against heat and oxidizes against light. Consequently, a pro-vitamin which precedes Vitamin C is used in manufacturing. Being oil -soluble, a pro-vitamin fixed onto fabrics is absorbed into the skin. The following mechanism is the change of the pro-vitamin into Vitamin C by various internal enzymes after its entry into the human body.
I HAVE an image of perfect health: a young woman, sparkling white teeth, thick glossy hair, clear skin, thin and muscular. This “picture of health” has been produced and refined by my 10- year diet of the front covers of womens health magazines featuring beautiful young women with their flat stomachs and tanned bodies. It is also possible to be beautiful and unhealthy, of course, but the links between health and beauty are now so intertwined that it is difficult to distinguish between the two. For many of us going to the gym or attempting to drink two litres of water a day, “to be healthy”, is just a cover up for the relentless pursuit of beauty.
Consumers are spending more than ever on health and beauty treatments, a reflection of the increasing emphasis on looking young and attractive. If the market is to grow significantly in the future, operators will need to make treatments more affordable and accessible to a wider range of consumers, especially men.

The new regulatory clearance for the full-face indication was based on a submission of clinical data from a multi-site study of 48 patients who received Thermage treatment on facial skin which showed a substantial reduction in laxity of the cheeks, jawline, and chin areas after one treatment session using a multiple-pass approach. There were no reports of adverse events. A previous study demonstrated improvement from a single Thermage treatment was sustained for at least the 12-month post treatment evaluation period, with the greatest improvement observed at three to six months post-treatment.
An unsolicited buyout offer of more than $130 million was made for the Hayward-based skin tightening company Thermage just a month after it announced its own purchase plan. Even though the name of the bidder wasnt disclosed, the $5.50 per share offer excited investors as shares of Thermage rose 44 percent, or $1.32, to $4.34. If it is approved, it would be a separate transaction from the $87.5 million deal made in July when Thermage announced it planned to buy out Mountain View-based skin resurfacing company Reliant Technologies for about $87.5 million in cash and stock.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

Augmented by multiinstrumentalist Dave Sitek and guitarist Kyp Malone, Adebimpes soaring, malleable vocals draw on Enoesque soundscapes as much as American indie rock, with dashes of Fifties street-corner doo-wop thrown in. Their debut album, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, was lo-fi and pretty hardcore, but soon attracted them big-name fans. David Bowie declared TV on the Radio his favourite new act, and his voice is buried with honours among the backing vocals of their second album, the superb Return to Cookie Mountain. Their gig at Koko is the last of a three-city dash through the UK before a short European tour. The original trio of Adebimpe, Sitek and Malone is augmented by bassist Jaleel Bunton and drummer Gerard Smith, and the crowd greet them like conquering heroes. Drawing on their latest album, this is an exhilarating show of heavy rock and heavy beats, mixed with electronic feedback, choreographed into a stream of consciousness. Between Afro-haired Malone and Adebimpe, they work up some good, ragged harmony vocals, and the epic choruses struggle out of their New York street clothes on songs like “Wolf Like Me”. “I Was a Lover”, the albums opener, is a stand-out track live, a great combination of drones, drums and bass, with strong vocals to match. The song lyrics are vivid, visceral, and weird in an out-of-joint way. Towards the end, the band are joined by a rag-tag of guests banging on hand percussion, while Tunde experiments with the public- address tones of a load-hailer. The sound of sirens soon follows, vocals veering between hip-hop rhythms and grungy howls, while abstract guitar pulses with the electronic backdrop of drones and alarms. It could easily be a case of too much going on in one place at once, but it works.

Children love swimming pools. When used with proper supervision, swimming pools are safe. But when children decide to use swimming pools without supervision, they are dangerous. Each year over 250 children under five years old drown in backyard swimming pools. Most die because no one is watching them. Many of the children accidentally fall in, and no one is there to rescue them. Consumer Reports, 6/97 pp. 8-9.

Coffee futures moved back above $1 in July, up from lows of 95 cents in mid-June. Prices likely will fluctuate because of the Brazilian weather for the next two months. There have been 17 freeze events in Brazil over the past 42 years, but only three in the past 21 years. Odds are we could see a significant price spike over the next six weeks. Traditionally, speculators bid up coffee prices ahead of the Brazilian winter, which runs from June through August. Then, if no frost damage occurs, prices tend to collapse by late August. John T. A legislative group wants to give the Utah Technology Industry Council a face lift to make it better able to address tech-sector issues. The state Technology Industry Commission on Wednesday passed out draft legislation that would make sweeping changes to the council, a state entity since 2003 that has discussed industry matters and suggested legislation considered by the commission. To ensure the committees have the help they need, the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel would assist UTIC, and the Governors Office of Economic Development would help the ad-hoc committees. The bill also would eliminate a requirement that the council have joint meetings with the technology commission.

There are around 3,000 “life coaches” in America, and numbers are rising. Even so, coaches in the States are still waiting for the day when people stop saying, “What is life-coaching?” and ask, “Who is your coach?” A coach is a hybrid of business advisor, mentor, therapist, counsellor - and grandma, who thinks youre perfect and wants you to be happy. Ive worked with counsellors for years, writing about their work. I admire it enormously, but whats exciting about coaching is the directness. A counsellor could have your problems and solutions taped in minutes, but months can pass as you are gentled through the process of discovering it for yourself. Coaches instead are straight-talking (but always positive), and will say what strikes them as the truth from the first session. Coaching is achievement- focused. It feels adult, and fast - you are encouraged to take action from day one to become more profitable, healthier, deal with unfinished emotional business, have more fun, make better relationships, or whatever is holding you back. Coaches are trained to handle anything but they tend to specialise in certain professions or life situations. It can be surprising. With my coach, Madeleine Homan, who specialises in creative types, I addressed my procrastination and writing blocks in our first talk. She didnt advise me about how to work harder, but asked me to take more time off - making one working day a week my “creative day” when I do whatever appeals. I tried out this and other suggestions, and just seven weeks later I work with more pleasure, less angst and increased effectiveness. I feel healthier, more energetic and more relaxed. Madeleine is in New York (not so crazy, as a half-hour call costs under pounds 4), but there are coaches in Britain (most working for corporates), 50 training with Coach University, the American “virtual” course, carried out through teleconferencing and e-mail. Some come from caring professions, but felt it made sense to look at practical and financial issues as well as the emotional. Some began as business consultants but couldnt ignore personal issues. They have been coaching for years, usually face-to-face, but some are starting to offer a telephone service. Sherrie Charlton is a UK coach. Vaughn Khelifa, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, was coached by her for 18 months.” I thought it would be like training - being lectured to by an expert. Instead Sherrie helped me think differently: what am I looking for from this; is this the best approach for that person? At the end, I ask myself if I handled it the best way, or how I could improve on it. It has given me confidence and skills that have helped me progress in my job and develop even better relationships with my husband and daughter.” Sherrie believes you have to look to your own development when helping others develop, and spends a quarter of her work hours on this. She is doing a Masters in personal and organisational development as well as a Coach University course. The training is fascinating in itself (Ive signed up). It is commonsense, with a spiritual slant, underpinned by a philosophy of personal excellence. Vocabulary can be puzzling (or a source of joy). One student supplied a word to a trainer who thanked her for “up-languaging me”; Madeleine thought I was confessing to promiscuity when I said I was a “slut”, though I was only admitting to cobwebs and clutter. But the concepts are universal and living with integrity one that is key. At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. We try to maximize understanding and optimize good health. End stage renal failure will come. Planning for this phase can be as natural as planning any life event. Then there is the labour of beginning treatment. A patient and family undergo major shifts in lifestyle. Crises come and, hopefully, dissipate.

The SHOT Show continues to set records in size and attendance, and the growth in the law-enforcement market plays a major role in the impressive expansion of the industrys largest trade show. Our law-enforcement section is now the second-largest law-enforcement show in the world. That, alone, creates a show within the show, said Doug Painter, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, owners of the show.
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. The Florida Board of Regents selected Orlando as the site for Florida AM Universitys new College of Law last month, endorsing the recommendation of FAMU president, Dr. Frederick S. Humphries, and chancellor, Dr. Adam Herbert, to locate the college there. According to Louis Murray, associate vice president for administrative and fiscal affairs and chairman of the FAMU Site Selection Committee, the universitys next step is to seek Board of Regents approval for the architectural program. Murray also says it will take about a year to complete the program design and another year to construct the building. Until the new building is completed, the FAMU College of Law will be housed at a temporary facility in Orlando. The planned completion date for the permanent facility is October 2004.

Theres a lovely number by Loudon Wainwright III called The Swimming Song that evokes the delights of bathing with both sharp wit and faux-naïf innocence. Kate and Anna McGarrigle covered it on their eponymous 1975 debut album — one of the all-time great records in my view, mixing folky exuberance and wrenching heartache in a manner that never seems to go stale — and in recent weeks I too have been singing The Swimming Song. All this will sound wildly unlikely to anyone who knows me but I swear it is true.
But she was let off with a strong warning instead of a two-year ban after it was discovered that her coach, Scott Volkerts, was responsible.
